Engagement refers to the collaborative relationship between the clinician and the client. In addition to considering attachment, development, family and broader systems/contextual issues, and cultural diversity, it is important for clinicians to value engagement and the therapeutic relationship.

Course Objectives

  • Become familiar with research findings that support the critical role of engagement and the therapeutic alliance.
  • Identify ways that barriers, safety issues, and working with underserved families impact how we engage clients and families.
  • Identify evidence-based interventions that enhance engagement and building of the therapeutic alliance.
  • Consider ways that we engage clients and families through a course of treatment.
  • Learn several strategies for evaluating engagement and the therapeutic alliance in your clinical practice.
