About

Adoption is a Team Endeavor

Adoptive families hold complex traumas, histories and needs that often require professional supports, attachment counsel, diagnoses of underlying ACES to help create a roadmap that will create stability for family, help the child grow in their potential and access care that heals the effects of trauma. This training will dive into the impact of Minnesota adoption systems on families and terms and resources that are critical to successfully navigating it. This training will also help those exploring adoption, kinship or fostering appreciate the complexities, mystery and resolution of parenting in non-traditional ways. This training will lean on the personal experiences of the trainers with the Minnesota adoption system.

Julie Carver (she/her/hers)

Building enduring relationships, Julie creates presence and gives voice to organizations, helping them achieve their goals. Her approach to business and life is fueled by a contagious enthusiasm. She digs in, pulls the uncommon threads, and weaves an authentic story that connects to customers and communities. Over her career, she has partnered with teams in corporate, agency and non-profit settings to re-energize communications strategy, strengthen brands, and execute internal and external communications programs. Her life was transformed in 2016 when she decided to embark on parenting by aligning with an agency that focused on treatment-level cases for children that had endured extended interactions with the child welfare system. Her family now teems with the energy and resilience of two amazing and loving young men.

Kristin Gonzalez, MSW, LICSW (she/her/hers)

Kristin obtained her foster care license in 2002 through Minnesota Children's Home Society. She is now the mother of 9, adoptive, biological and step-children, and grandmother to 5. She received her Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Minnesota. Kristin is passionate about everything related to supporting and understanding the experiences of children and families navigating out of home placement. Kristin is rostered in Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), an intervention modality designed to help young children, ages birth to 6, and their caregivers make meaning and heal after stressful and traumatic experiences. She graduated from the Permanency and Adoption Competency Certificate (PACC) program through the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare at the University of Minnesota in 2021.

After 16 years of full-time parenting, Kristin began her current role at Washburn Center for Children as an In-Home Family Therapist, where she is able to integrate her personal and professional experience. It is Kristin's belief that adoption, foster and kinship care are full of joy, loss, grief and complexity, but when families are willing to live into their story, make meaning of it and build in layers of support, they can influence their trajectory.
