Developmental Repair for Community Professionals:

Supporting Stressed Children

Developmental Repair is an intensive treatment model for working with children ages 3 to 3rd grade who have experienced complex trauma and present with aggressive and disruptive symptoms. The model was developed by Anne Gearity, PhD, LICSW, in collaboration with Washburn Center for Children staff, and is currently used by the Washburn Center Day Treatment program.

Participants receive a certificate of completion for 5 hours of training*

Children are especially vulnerable to stress, and many services in our community are seeing children who are experiencing distress. This workshop will apply the Developmental Repair approach—an intensive treatment model used in Washburn's Day Treatment program—to community settings.

In different settings these children appear as:

  • dysregulated
  • having behavior problems
  • struggles with learning
  • difficulty adjusting to new situations
  • trouble with peers
  • compromised attention or problem solving skills
  • may seem estranged, fearful, or confused about whom to trust

In Developmental Repair, providers learn what protects children in the face of adversity and how reliable and intentional support can mediate risks.

This workshop will demonstrate how ideas grounded in both development and mental health can be applied in settings such as:

  • schools
  • supportive housing
  • shelters
  • day cares
  • foster homes
