Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to treat posttraumatic stress and related emotional and behavioral difficulties in children and adolescents. Thanks to a grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, this training is free for qualified participants.

Mental health professionals will gain a comprehensive understanding of TF-CBT and its application in therapy through 4 days of training and 14 consultations. For more information of TF-CBT certification, visit tfcbt.org.

 

Training is presented through an interactive lecture which includes:

  • PowerPoint presentation
  • Small group activities
  • Video demonstrations of interventions
  • Clinical case presentations

    In-Person Training Dates:

    Arrival & sign-in at 8:45 AM each day; 1 hour lunch break every day

     

    In-Person Training Location: 

             Washburn Center for Children's Training Institute

    Virtual Consultations:

    14 monthly video consultation calls with Dr. Hong. 

     

    CEUs:

    Minimum 21 hours (up to 22 hours for some boards)*

    *pre-approved by MN Board of Social Work, MN Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy, MN Board of Marriage and Family Therapy, and MN Board of Psychology

     


    Trainers

    David Hong, PsyD, LP (he/him/his)

    Dr. David Hong is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. He earned his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Carleton College and his doctoral degree from the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology, where he studied Clinical Psychology with a minor in Child and Family Therapy. In over 10 years in community mental health settings, he has worked in several capacities including: outpatient therapy, psychological assessment, group therapy, day treatment, in-home therapy, residential treatment, day treatment and clinical supervision. Dr. Hong is an adjunct faculty member at the Washburn Training Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is a nationally certified trainer of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and provides training across the United States and internationally. He currently does clinical work in a private practice, where he specializes in services for children, adolescents and immigrant populations, with a focus on trauma.

     

    LaCresha Payne, MSW, LGSW (she/her/hers)

    LaCresha Payne has 17 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and their families. She has co-facilitated racial dialogues with adolescents, provided academic support and guidance, and managed adolescents judicially. LaCresha has worked with families and children in exploring solutions to emotional, mental, and social challenges. LaCresha has provided individual and family therapy for the past 9 years with Kente Circle. LaCresha believes that all people are capable of greatness if given support, knowledge, and compassion. LaCresha graduated from St. Olaf College with an undergraduate degree in Social Work and American Racial and Multicultural Studies. She completed her Master's degree in Social Work with an emphasis in Adolescents and Families from the University of Minnesota School of Social Work.

     

    Alex Liu, MA, LPCC (he/him/his)

    Alex Liu is a Clinical Supervisor for the School-Based Therapy Program through Washburn Center for Children. He started at Washburn Center for Children in 2017. Prior to his supervisor role, Alex worked as a school-based therapist serving kids and their families at a school in North Minneapolis. Alex also comes with extensive experience working in preschool mental health day treatment settings. He became TF-CBT Certified in 2019 and has used the model with mostly elementary school-aged children. Alex holds necessity in understanding that children, or humans in general, who have experienced trauma need holding spaces for nurturance, emotional organization, understanding and healing. Alex is excited to be currently partnered with DHS, David Hong, Kente Circle and Washburn Center for Children to provide more training and access to TF-CBT across the state of Minnesota.

     


    Eligibility

    • Our TF-CBT training program is designed for MN-based therapists to learn the basics of TF-CBT as well as advanced applications of TF-CBT to special populations/clinical presentations such as: foster care, African-American youth, youth on the autism spectrum, LGBTQ+ youth, traumatic grief, youth with problematic sexual behaviors, and more.  
    • Trainees must be licensed/licensed-eligible therapists in mental health and interested in becoming certified TF-CBT providers.
    • Trainees must have agency support for TF-CBT materials, sufficient training time, and referrals of at least 2-4 TF-CBT cases in the 14 months following the training.
    • Trainees must see an active caseload of age-appropriate children/adolescents (ages 3 - 18) who have a clear memory of their trauma as well as access to an engaged support person/caregiver. 

     


    Required Prerequisite Training

    Completion of the online TF-CBT web training is required prior to attending TF-CBT Training.  Register and complete Foundations of TF-CBT at: http://tfcbt2.musc.edu/

    Due April 29th: All trainees must send their certificate of completion to Maggie Hennessy at maggie.hennessy@washburn.org.

    Costs $35 |  11 CEUs  |  Takes approximately 10 hours and may be done in multiple sittings.

    Please complete the TF-CBT Application Form at the link below to register for this training if you think you are a good fit for it. Once you complete the form, you will receive an email within 2-3 business days notifying you of enrollment.

    Can't Make These Dates?

    We will be hosting 3 TF-CBT trainings for MN-based practitioners in the upcoming fiscal year. One will be in-person in the Twin Cities, one will be in-person in Northern Minnesota, and one will be virtual. Dates to be determined. Please contact traininginstitute@washburn.org to be added to the list of people to notify once dates are determined.

     

    Cancellation policy:

    Due to limited seating, cancellations or changes must be made at least 3 business days before training date. We will do our best to accommodate placement in a training on a different date.
